Just left the gym (no, that’s not a typo) and it was the first day I’ve stuck to my workout schedule. I lifted and did cardio on Tuesday and then again today. Needless to say, I was feeling it. My left shoulder was so wrecked towards the end of my workout, that I had to use a five-pound dumbell for a shoulder press. I could barely get my arm above my head.
Normally this feeling leaves me brimming with dread at the thought of trying to get up the next day and being temporarily paralyzed for my over-exertion. But not anymore.
I have learned the secret of the dry sauna. A sage 24-hour fitness professional named Joe first revealed it to me while trying to get me to sign up for some $2,000 personal training package. He said, “If you normally get pretty sore after a workout, just pop in the dry sauna for about 10 minutes or so and you’ll feel a lot better the next day.”
I didn’t take Joe’s advice about the training, but I did give the sauna a try. I didn’t have anything to lose. It was an steamy, alien environment, filled with old copies of the Dallas Morning News’ “Quick” digest newspaper, brittle like ancient scrolls from the dehydrated atmosphere. I was uncomfortable at first, but I did my time and left. The next day, I was fresh as a daisy.
***WARNING*** If at this point, you who are more knowledgable about these issues than I feel the need to point out that a dry sauna actually has no proven medical benefit to relieve sore muscles, BITE YOUR TONGUE. IF IT IS A PLACEBO EFFECT, IT’S WORKING. Let me lie in my ignorant bliss.
I went in again after foolishly getting into a pickup basketball game with a few faculty members and some of our boys’ varsity starters at my high school. (Note: Our boys have been back-to-back area and district champions and one of the best 5A teams in Texas over the past two years) Needless to say, my legs were wrecked. But no need to fear, dry sauna to the rescue.
My life has been changed by the gospel of the dry sauna and maybe yours has too. If not, just give it a try. Trust me, you have nothing to lose but aches and pain.
The only thing bothering me is why I never heard of the wonders of the dry sauna before now. How might my life be different if I had heard about this months or years ago? And what else is out there, still a mystery to me?
